Do you have these 9 traits? (Legacy Part 4)

gratitude

Gratitude: Noun: The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. Synonyms: gratefulness – thankfulness – thanks – appreciation

Platitude: Noun – 1. A remark or statement, esp. one with a moral content, that has been used too often to be interesting or thoughtful. 2. The quality of being dull, ordinary, or trite. Synonyms: commonplace, cliche, triteness

Joseph Stalin once said: “Gratitude is a sickness suffered by dogs.” No wonder the man was a tyrant. A man who was an authoritarian ruler who murdered his own people. But, John Henry Jowett, provided the cure Stalin could have used: “Gratitude is a vaccine, an antitoxin, and an antiseptic.” Is that right? Can you say that gratitude is a vaccine? Can it really be a healing factor?
Let me state now that I believe gratitude is necessary for a positive legacy.  A person CAN NOT be a negative person and expect to leave a positive legacy. The picture below really says something about gratitude.

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.” Melody Beattie

So, just what are the benefits of being grateful? Here are some of the benefits:

Grateful people…

  • have more energy and optimism
  • are less bothered by life’s hassles
  • are more resilient in the face of stress
  • are healthier
  • suffer less depression than the rest of us
  • are more compassionate
  • are more likely to help others
  • are less materialistic
  • are more satisfied with life.

Gratitude. Without it, I can only imagine I would be a very unhappy person. And who wants to be around an unhappy person? Gratitude. It is NOT a platitude in any way. It is real, it is important, it is needed in our lives – and thus in the the world.

I can say a lot more on that, but I want to close with a video. After that, your comments are welcome. Just play this video, and then let me know your thoughts.

  1. I love the Melody Beattie quote. I have found this true in my life. By embracing gratitude, I also embrace abundance. And it transforms how I interact with others. I fail as often as I succeed in these pursuits, but I keep going because gratitude make a positive difference in my life.
